Buchmann to shut down BM 2 and exit virgin fibre board market

Board machine BM 2 was erected in 1929, and is no longer competitive due to its working width of 2.5 m and limited construction speed, according to the company.

German carton board manufacturer Kartonfabrik Buchmann has announced plans to shut down its board machine BM 2 and cease production of virgin fibreboard as of 31 March 2021. The closure will affect roughly 30 of the 350 employees.

Around 30,000 tpy of cartonboard were being produced in recent years on BM 2. Buchmann Karton confirmed that once production ceases on this machine, the company will also stop offering boards made with grass fiber content.

Buchmann Karton will thus focus on the production of recycled fibreboard in the future.
