Burgo restarts operations at Tolmezzo paper mill

Preparatory work for the restart began on Monday and both paper machines were up and running again, says Burgo.

Burgo Group has resumed production at the Tolmezzo fine and specialty paper mill in Italy after more than 10 days of downtime.

The group had to suspend operations at the Tolmezzo mill as of 5 November after four people working at the mill’s power plant were tested positive for coronavirus. With four out of eleven employees missing from work, it was not possible for Burgo to maintain regular three-shift operations at the power plant and continue supplying electricity and process steam to the mill for pulping, paper making, and finishing operations, Italy’s daily Il Messagero Veneto reported last week.

The Tolmezzo mill is run by Burgo’s subsidiary Mosaico. The site houses two paper machines and produces uncoated woodfree paper for offset printing and cut-sizes, uncoated woodfree base paper for packaging applications, as well as machine-glazed packaging paper grades in basis weights of 18 to 140 g/m².
