The fire broke out in the dryer section of the mill’s paper machine. In an interview with the local newspaper Terre Marsicane, a spokesman of Italian Slc Cgil trade union described the damage as quite extensive. Not only the paper machine but also the hall’s roof is said to have been damaged.
He was nevertheless confident that production could be resumed in two weeks or three weeks at the latest, the spokesman said in the interview held on 3 March. In the meantime, a part of the employees will work at Burgo’s Sora mill which is located close to Avezzano.
The Avezzano paper mill produces recycled corrugated case material on one machine, which has a capacity of 200,000 tpy.
