Russia’s oldest PPM Pitkyaranta pulp mill to be subject of modernization this year

Pitkyaranta pulp mill, one of Russia’s largest pulp and paper mills, based in Karelia will significantly increase its output this year, due to the conducted modernization.

Under the terms of the project new equipment and machinery will be installed on the basis of the plant.

The volume of investments in the project will reach 1.4 billion rubles.

Pitkyaranta Pulp Mill is one of the oldest enterprises in Karelia, in 2021 the plant celebrated the 100th anniversary. At present, the volume of production of unbleached cellulose at the plant is estimated at about 110,000 tons per year, the share of the company in the market for electrical grade cellulose exceeds 20%.

The launch of a new wood-processing plant will increase the output up to 130,000 tonnes per year and improve its quality characteristics. As part of the modernization of production, it is planned to introduce a technology that will reduce emissions of methyl mercaptan by 90%. It is also planned to modernize the treatment facilities at the plant.

 

That will not be a single industry project, that will be implemented in Karelia this year. As part of the plans is also conducting modernization of the Kondopoga PPM, which will be partially redesigned due to a drop in demand for newsprint. In addition, the Segezha Group, one of Russia’s largest timber holdings, will build a new pulp and paper production facility in Karelia, investing 178 billion rubles in the project. A pulp and paper cluster “Segezha-West” will appear in the city of Segezha, which will also include JSC “Segezha PPM” and LLC “Segezha packaging.
