Smurfit Kappa has started up a new paper sacks machine at its plant in Palmira, Colombia. This $9.5m investment, which was announced in February 2020, has increased the plant’s production capacity by 100 million multi-ply paper sacks per year.

The new machine is part of a $40m investment package to modernize its paper sacks production platform in response to the increasing demand for environmentally sustainable paper sacks, the company said.

As part of this package, Smurfit Kappa has started a project to modernize and expand one of the paper machines at its facility in Cali, Colombia. This $19m investment will be developed with global technology companies Voith Group and A.Celli Group. The project will increase production capacity and the quality and performance of the sack paper.

In the second quarter of 2021, Smurfit Kappa will invest $1m in the installation of a new flexographic printer at its paper sacks plant in San Jose, Costa Rica. The $10m investment at the paper sacks plant in the Dominican Republic was finalized in 2018.
